CHEYENNE With the Poster, Poetry, and Essay competition now underway, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department is encouraging students across Wyoming to participate in this exciting learning opportunity for teachers and students.

As part of the Wyoming Hunting and Fishing Expo, the Poetry, Poster, and Essay Competition offers students the chance to win up to a $200 savings bond and the opportunity to be showcased at the annual event, held each September.

Any Wyoming student can participate by either drawing a poster (for grades 3-6), writing a poem (for grades 7-9), or writing an essay (for grades 10-12) that emphasizes this year's Expo theme of "Forever Wild." All competition entries must integrate this theme into their product and should focus on ethical outdoor stewardship. All entries must be received before 5 p.m. April 13, 2012.

"This is a great way to get youth to start thinking about wildlife conservation," said Tristanna Bickford, conservation education manager of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. "In this competition, students are asked to express what Wyoming's wildlife means to them, and because of this," Bickford explains, "actively participating in this contest encourages students to consider their own involvement in Wyoming's outdoor culture."

All entries will be displayed in the Wildlife and Wild Scenes Gallery during the Expo, which will be held at the Casper Events Center, Sept. 13-15. In addition, savings bonds donated by Wyoming businesses will be awarded to the winners. The first, second, and third place winners in each category will receive a $200, $150, and $100 savings bond respectively. All winners will also receive an award ribbon, certificate, and complimentary one-year subscription to Wyoming Wildlife magazine. Winners will also have the opportunity to be recognized at the Expo '12 Awards Banquet, held in Casper during the event.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the annual Wyoming Hunting and Fishing Expo, hosted by the Game and Fish. According to Bickford it is a one-of-a-kind dynamic event that offers over 150 free activities, exhibits, and demonstrations for all ages and skill levels tied to the State Department of Education Content and Performance Standards in numerous academic disciplines.

"With the focus on youth conservation education, the Expo serves to ensure the future of Wyoming's hunting, fishing, and wildlife viewing culture for generations to come," she said.
