04/01/2010 - By Marcia Patton

For thirty-one years, the Children's Chorale and the Mother's Day Concert have been a musical tradition in Casper. Each season there are eighty children, ages 9-14, performing with the auditioned Chorale. Locally, the singers offer a public school tour, a church tour, and a holiday concert with the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra. The Casper Children's Chorale will present its 31st Annual Mother's Day Concert on Sunday, May 9th at 6:30 p.m. at Kelly Walsh High School Auditorium. The program will include classical, ethnic, and folk music from Handel to Bernstein to contemporary, in Latin, Spanish, Swahili, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and English. Tickets are $6 and may be purchased at the door.

The Children's Chorale provides a positive choral music experience for young singers with unchanged voices. The Chorale has a reputation as a highly disciplined performing group, but its main promotion is the knowledge and love of singing. They have toured throughout Wyoming and across our nation, from Los Angeles to New York, from Chicago to Vancouver, B.C. They have been chosen by taped audition for regional and national conventions, and won competitions singing with choirs from throughout the U.S. April 15-19th they will travel to a Heritage Choral Festival in Orlando, Florida. That trip includes performance and clinic with nationally recognized choral adjudicators, listening to other choirs, and visits to Universal Studios, Cocoa Beach, and the Kennedy Space Center.

School tour will be Monday, May 3rd, with performances at Frontier/CCA at 8:00 A.M., Park School at 9:15, Evansville Elementary at 10:30, Manor Heights at 1:00 P.M., Grant at 2:00 p.m., and Verda James at 2:50 P.M.

Alla Breve, the fifty voice women's chorus and upper division of the Children's Chorale, just returned from a very successful performance in Seattle, WA, for the All Northwest Choral Director's Convention. These ladies, many of whom are former Chorale singers or Moms of current members, will also perform in the Mother's Day Concert. Alums are encouraged to join everyone on stage for the culminating traditional song "In His Eyes".

Singers in the Children's Chorale attend one Tuesday rehearsal (4:00-5:30) each week and one additional 5:30-7:00 p.m. Thursday rehearsal per month. The Chorale is a non-profit group administered by a parent Board of Directors, with funding from donations and singer's tuition of $30 monthly. Fund-raising activities and scholarships are available to help singers pay tuition and trip costs. The conductor of the Children's Chorale is Marcia Patton, Paula Flynn is pianist, and vocal assistants are Robin Bisiar, Shereen Mosier, Erin Flanagan, and Luanne Marshall.

New member screenings for the 2010-11 school year will be May 11th-27th at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 701 S. Wolcott. These screenings are in groups of 5-6 children (please sign up individually and do not predetermine groups), and can be scheduled by calling 267-1574, between the hours of 1-3 p.m. Successful applicants will be placed into either the Children's Chorale (current 3rd through 7th graders), or the primer choir Bel Canto (current 1st through 4th graders). Bring a self-addressed, stamped 9x4 envelope so that audition results can be mailed by June 1st. Rehearsals begin September 7th.
