08/01/2009 - Kaylee Sorter admits that she is not used to being the center of attention. "My brother is usually the one in the spotlight," she said. Twelve-year-old Kaylee's older brother Andy (16) has Muscular Dystrophy and is one of the ambassadors for Wyoming. Kaylee is used to seeing him interviewed, but found it a new experience to answer questions about herself.

Kaylee, Andy and their parents, Paula and Dane, have lived in Casper almost seven years. Kaylee likes Casper, describing it as, "beautiful with lots to do here, like fishing and hunting." Kaylee said the Sorters are a family of hunters. She enjoys hunting with her parents, and sometimes a family friend who is a hunting guide. "It's fun just being outdoors with my family," she said. So far Kaylee has bagged an elk and two turkeys. She plans to add deer and antelope to the list this year.

When she isn't shooting at wild animals, Kaylee aims at targets in 4-H shooting sports. She does archery and muzzleloader right now, but plans to add shotgun next year.

"It helps with hand/eye coordination," Kaylee said about 4-H. "It also helps with learning shooting a gun, a bow, and where to shoot the animals for the best kill. Like you don't want to shoot in the stomach or you'll ruin the meat."

In addition to 4-H, Kaylee is a Girl Scout. She has been in the Scouts for six years and enjoys doing crafts, cooking, Christmas caroling, selling Girl Scout cookies and volunteering. "It's fun and I have friends in the troop with me," she said. Through Girl Scouts, Kaylee has helped clean up parts of the community and made centerpieces for Meals on Wheels. Kaylee also volunteers with MDA and Make-A-Wish. The whole family is involved in fundraising for these causes.

Kaylee will be in the seventh grade at CY Junior High in the fall. She was on the honor roll all last year and always has a book in her hand. "She reads for hours," her mom said. Kaylee said she likes to read thick chapter books like Harry Potter and Twilight. She also likes watching TV shows like SpongeBob, iCarly, and The Suite Life of Zach and Cody. Sports are another of Kaylee's passions. She plays softball, basketball, volleyball, and runs track. This summer she is playing softball on the La Cocina team through the Casper Rec Center.

Although Kaylee is involved in a lot of activities, she is most content spending time with her family. They are the most important to her for the following reasons:

• THEY HELP WHEN YOU HAVE QUESTIONS

• THEY CAN TEACH YOU STUFF

• IF YOU'RE LONELY, YOU CAN GO PLAY WITH ONE OF YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS

• THEY SUPPORT YOU AND HELP YOU MAKE GOOD DECISIONS

KAYLEE IS A BUSY GIRL, BUT ONE WHO HAS HER PRIORITIES IN ORDER. SHE HAS DEVELOPED A GOOD BALANCE BETWEEN HAVING FUN, APPRECIATING HER FAMILY AND DOING FOR OTHERS.
