05/01/2008 - So, are you and your family planning a road trip this summer? Maybe to the Park, or the Tower, or the Hills? (Hey! Yet another simple joy of being a Wyomingite. Using this shorthand for these majestic places, while the rest of the world knows them only by their formal names. Yellowstone Park. Devil's Tower. The Black Hills. Very cool.)

I can picture you meandering these breathtaking locales in an RV or maybe a 5th-wheel. Such transport allows you to indulge in a little "up-scale" camping where you can revel in our Rocky-Mountain-High, starry, starry nights, but where, when you call it a night, you can still have a comfy bed to "sack out on".

And, because it's one of the biggest RV/5th-wheel dealerships in the Rocky Mountain region, I imagine you bought your sweet transport from Stalkup's RV.

Owner/operator Ray Stalkup is a home-grown Casperite who was raised under the watchful eye of his late father Max Stalkup of Max's Honda. Back then, Max also carried RVs and boats. "He's my hero," Ray says of his father. "He was a good human being, teacher. From the time my brother and I were kids, he taught us to keep the lot clean, detail vehicles, work on RV engines."

Max also taught his boys "to do business the Wyoming way." To stand behind their products and service so they would create customers for life. Apparently it's working because Stalkup's RV has been in the same location since the family purchased it in 1975. "We bought it from Fay Peebles who had opened it in 1939. It's the second oldest existing RV dealership in the country. And the first Winnebago dealership west of the Mississippi."

Stalkup's RV has ridden Casper's economic ups and downs "...and we've managed to stay in business. We even grew. We work very hard at being the best we can be. We research and do homework to find the best manufacturers who stand behind their products."

Besides new and used RVs and 5th-wheels, Stalkup's carries "new and used trailers, stock trailers, boats, cars, trucks, motor cycles, skid-mount trailers for oil field." In other words, I'm thinkin' if it can be driven or pulled, they probably have it. Or will trade for it. "We've always taken trades."

Ray has an outstanding team of managers, technicians, and sales people. "All of our employees like this business and enjoy being here as much as I do," Ray tells me. "This is a people-business and we hire people-persons" who are also well trained in their areas of expertise and who "go to schools across the country to keep their knowledge up."

Ray's wife Amie also works for the business and their daughter April Tasher serves on the board of directors. In his office I see photos of three very cute little kids. His grandchildren, ages seven, four, and seven-months.

"Our family has always been a part of this community. We like to help with community development. We're looking forward to the City's plans for the Old Yellowstone development," which is the district where Stalkup's RV is located. At 501 W. Yellowstone, just a little west of the Iris Theater.

"We like Wyoming life. It's still a little more free than other places. Our family and friends are here. We like the recreation, too. We like to snow ski, golf, boat, fish, snorkel, ride ATVs and snowmobiles. This is the place."

Stalkup's RV hours are 8 to 5:30 Monday through Friday. During the summer season (March 1 October 31), the sales office is also open on Sundays 10 to 4. Their phone is 577-9350.
