03/01/2007 - Caleb Gray, age 10, seems surprised as his mother Katrina tells me some of the things people say about him. His former teacher from Sheridan, for instance.

"'Thoughtful and caring.'" Katrina quotes. "'Gentle and patient with the younger students. They considered him like a brother.'"

Caleb's face lights up. "For real?!"

When Caleb was in first grade, he won Student of the Year. And that was from a field of all students in his school in grades 1 though 3.

Caleb moved to Casper from Sheridan over Thanksgiving with his dad Tim, mom, and 8-year-old brother David.

After their move, Caleb settled successfully into his new school, Mount Hope Lutheran. He's on the Head Master's Honor Roll. Can't do that without earning straight A's. His favorite subjects are Latin and violin.

"Learning violin is easy. It's so easy. It's easier than piano."

Away from school, Caleb is active in a youth organization called AWANA (Approved Workman Are Not Ashamed). During a recent contest among the group, Caleb won handily. The other parents and leaders took note of how Caleb conducted himself after winning. Tim notes, "He is gracious in victory. It's admirable how he handles winning."

"Caleb enjoys doing things for others," Katrina says. He sings in duets, trios, and quintets at nursing homes and for shut-ins. He recites poetry and scripture for women's and auxiliary groups and at church. He helps set up at church. "If someone needs help, he helps without being asked," she says.

One of the things Caleb's loves most about Casper is the Recreation Center. He and his family go ice skating there at least once a week. He and David also enjoy the swimming pool and water slides.

At home, Caleb likes building models, working with Legos, playing the computer game "Civilization," and having family night where the four eat pizza and play a board game or watch a movie. Once a week he makes dinner for his family. His speciality is Mock Chicken Almond. He likes reading adventure novels and learning about history. Especially the Civil War, the Revolutionary War, and World War II.

The Snyder's are avid fans of the St. Louis Cardinals as evidenced by Caleb's tee shirt, red ball cap, and the throw draped over the living room chair.

Caleb and David are looking forward to the coming summer when they can again go fishing in the Big Horns with their dad. On one fishing trip last summer, Tim caught a beautiful German Brown trout, but when it was almost reeled in, it got away. Standing beside his dad in the shallow water, Caleb reached in and scooped up that disobedient fish.

My guess is that there is one particular German Brown who doesn't think Caleb is a gentleman. But the rest of us think he is. And we're glad Caleb is making Casper his home.
