03/01/2007 - The chase is on! Eisley, my pug, did a no no and i'm going to reprimand him...if I can catch him in our backyard. My son, Simon, five at the time, watches wide-eyed and comments, "I didn't know Mom could run so fast!". My husband, Randy, tries to give me some sound advice but I am too mad to heed it.

The faster I run, the faster Eisley dodges around me. We go round and round until I stop to catch my breath and gather my senses. Eisley pauses, too, and warily looks at me. Now I kindly motion for him to come, but he won't. I become acutely aware of my uncontrolled anger and how it has separated us.

Anger comes from the Latin root word, "ango" meaning "to choke". Like a boa constrictor, anger can wrap itself around us and choke out the life, love and sensibility within us.

None of us are exempt from anger. We will experience this strong emotion but it does not have to have a suffocating hold on us.

How can we escape its grip? First, we must deal with it promptly. The faster we deal with it, the less of a hold it will have on us. Secondly, we must deal with it correctly. In order to do that, we need to draw strength from the virtue of meekness. Pride is not strong enough to contend with anger. Only in meekness, the blending of humility and patience, can we find the strength to escape its hold.

Anger can also act like chlorine. It doesn't take much to experience its choking nature. Ironically, when chlorine is combined with sodium, it changes into the life-giving compound we know as salt. Now it helps our bodies transport oxygen and assist us in breathing. Anger, when combined with meekness, changes from a choking emotion to a life-giving opportunity to demonstrate our love.

Meekness is amazing. It is so life-giving and life changing.
