03/01/2006 - Fresh off a playoff season, the Wyoming Cavalry open their home schedule on March 24th against expansion Bozeman in the Casper Events Center. "We hope to build on the momentum of last season's success", says returning Head Coach Shannon Moore about their 10-4 record in 2005.

The Cavalry are part of the National Indoor Football league and play in the Western Division of the Pacific Conference. Competition will remain at a high level as the Tri-Cities Fever and natural rival Billings Mavericks are expected to field strong squads once again.

Though played on a smaller field (50 yards plus end zones) and with only 8 players to a side rather than 1l, the game is full speed and the hitting is full power. The fans can practically reach out and touch the players, adding to the excitement. Even the scoreboard turns your head as the Cavalry averaged over 50 points per game last season.

The action continues for the fans during timeouts and breaks. New on the field in '06 is the WYHY Federal Credit Union Kids Race. This is in addition to the The Bud Ball "Human Gerbil" race, the Mossholder's/Mattress Stop bed race and the RhinoLinings wheelbarrow race. The Coliseum Crowd "9th Man" provides motivation for the team and the Big Wyoming Game Ball goes out to a fan each game. 303 Restaurant will provide special 3rd quarter giveaways.

The Cavalry mascot, Custer, was voted best mascot in the conference this offseason. He hosts the Pepsi "Custer Kid's Club". You can find registration info on the Cavalry website at www.wyomingcavalry.com. Kids can also visit Custer's Concourse of Activities with face painting, sign making and more. Families have the option of sitting in the new "Family Section" this year where no alcohol or inappropriate language will be allowed.

Along with Coach Moore, a solid core of players from last year's squad return to provide continuity. J.R. Ruffin returned 4 kicks for touchdowns last year and provides coverage on the corner. Returning receivers include Jamar Farves, Justin Wampler, Jason Quinn, Corey Grow and they'll be joined by veteran newcomers Mike Montoya and Tory James. The receivers will be catching passes from a new quarterback this season. The most experienced of the new QB's is Frank Borba out of Menlo College in California. He has played in both the Arena and A2 leagues along with Rapid City of the NIFL. Dan Richard out of Ferris St. in Grand Rapids, MI and Scott Jeffries from California will compete with Borba for the starting job.

Lucien Scott and Frank Bright return to the offensive and defensive lines respectively while Joe Gibson anchors the linebacking corp. Notable additions to the defense include 6'6" 340 lb. Paris Long from Ohio State and Luke Scarborough from Cincinnati.

Ed Ashley has been with the Cavalry since the beginning and returns to coach the linemen. Newcomer Rodney Swanigan will be Defensive Coordinator. Swanigan was Defensive Coordinator with the Cincinnati Marshalls last season.

The Cavalry deserve congratulations for another important award won at the league meetings, Most Community Oriented. Thanks, Cav's, for bringing so much to Our Town.
