03/01/2006 - I don't know about you but when I think of chimney sweeps visions of Dick Van Dyke dancing on roof tops singing, "chim-chiminey, chim-chiminey, chim-chim-charee, a sweep is as lucky as lucky can be"...hmmm...one wonders. Steve Schicketanz, owner of Magic City Chimney Sweeps and Stoves describes his "humble beginnings" cleaning chimneys in 1984 when he bought Top Hat Chimney Sweeps. He ran the business until 1987 when he sold it. In 1989 he opened Black Magic Chimney Sweeps, then located on "F" Street. "We started small, with one stove," Steve remembers.

"You mean one KIND of stove?" I queried.

In the years since, Steve's hard work has paid off. When he first rented the Center Street Building, there was just enough money to put in the chimney and the ONE STOVE.

After purchasing the building 7 years ago and acquiring the warehouse (located on Midwest) Magic City boasts of more than 70 stoves on display. "We have 6,000 sq. ft. of showroom, the largest fireplace showroom in Wyoming," says Steve.

"Our goal is excellence in customer service and quality of products," Steve explains. "We offer solutions for the high cost of heating. Pellet stoves have really taken off the last 3 years." Magic City carries a good supply of pellets.

Steve and his wife, Amy, will celebrate their 17th wedding anniversary in August. He was "pretty much" smitten when he met her at a meeting. Steve and Amy are very proud of their daughter, Sarah, and son, Steve. Sarah is an Honor Roll student at NCHS who runs track. Steve is in 9th grade at Dean Morgan and is described by his Dad as a " likable kid...everybody likes him". He plays drums and enjoys racing stock cars, a hobby shared by his Dad, who started 4 years ago and "got hooked on it". Amy is on the Board of Directors for the Casper Speedway. Steve owns 3 cars and when he's not racing them, he enjoys snowmobiling.

When asked what he likes about Casper Steve says, "I love the people...they're the best people anywhere...there's always someone willing to help you. I also love the wide open spaces." Steve recently returned from a trip to Barcelona and was "grateful to get back".

In the off season Magic City increases their inventory and offers "big summer sales". If you're looking for a solution to the high cost of heating, or just want your chimney cleaned, contact them at 473-1016 or drop in at 426 S. Center St. in Casper. After all, as Dick Van Dyke sang, "Good luck will rub off when I shakes hands with you!"
