09/01/2005 - In Casper and Wyoming's recent history, we seemed to be an afterthought as businesses and individual families seeking relocation were more enamored of our Mountain West neighbors. No longer!

American City Business Journals' latest ranking of economic vitality showed Wyoming tied with Nevada for the top spot among the 50 states.

In an article about the rankings, G. Scott Thomas wrote, "Wyoming is a quiet success story, enjoying strong growth in per capita personal income and gross state product, which measures a state's total output of goods and services".

Economist Brian Wesbury of Claymore Advisors LLC was quoted in part, "...Wyoming is more than just commodities (oil, gas and coal). It's diversifying, and it has an excellent business climate.

The rankings were determined by growth rates in four differerent categories: population, nonfarm employment, per capita personal income and gross state product.

The region did well with 5 of the top ten states representing the Mountain West. The other states from the region were Nevada (tie #1), Montana (#4), Idaho (#7) and South Dakota (#10), though the story grouped South Dakota with the Midwest.

Stoking more fuel on an already hot economy was an article in the Christian Science Monitor. In reviewing economic activity in the region, author Mark Trumbull spoke with John Eaton of the Idaho Assoc. of Realtors. He wrote, "To Mr. Eaton, the best word to describe all of this activity and growth is 'sustainable'".

They also highlighted the high rankings of Mountain West cities (including Casper) in recent economic development national measurements.
