Around Our Town...Making a Difference

04/01/2005 - Wyoming Medical Center recognizes the Auxiliary Volunteers for 52 years of service to the hospital and community, during National Volunteer Week, April 18 - 23.

Serving Wyoming Medical Center (formerly Memorial Hospital of Natrona County) and the community has been the guiding philosophy for the Auxiliary since its founding in May 1953. Mrs. Earl Long served as the first president of the Auxiliary and over 40 women signed up to begin volunteering.

The first Auxiliary services were the information desk and library cart, which provided magazines and reading materials to patients and waiting areas. Through the years, the volunteer services have continued to grow to meet many needs of the hospital. There are currently 23 volunteer services offered by the Auxiliary. Some of these include, information desks host, flower delivery, patient escorts, Gift Shop and Mended Hearts, just to mention a few. The Auxiliary would not be able to provide all of these services without the help of more than 200 volunteers..

Through the years, the Auxiliary has provided funding for medical equipment, remodel projects and the Cancer Resource Center. They are especially proud of the Employee Scholarship Program, which provides financial assistance to Wyoming Medical Center Employees pursuing additional education in their related field. In 2003-2004, over $25,000 in scholarships were given to WMC Employees, through a program funded by the sales in the hospital Gift Shop.

During 2004, the Auxiliary volunteers gave more than 27,500 hours of their time to the patients, visitors and staff at Wyoming Medical Center, as well as the Casper community. In recognition for their hours of giving, and to thank them for 52 years of service, a Recognition and Awards Luncheon is being planned. The next time you are visiting the hospital and see a friendly face wearing the designated "pink lady" jacket or "blue man" vest, take a moment to stop and thank them for all they do. Whether it is assisting patients, answering questions, or delivering flowers, volunteers add a special dimension of care to Wyoming Medical Center. We salute our Auxiliary Volunteers for 52 years of dedicated service.

If you are at least 14 years of age and would like more information on becoming a volunteer at Wyoming Medical Center, call Michele Holder, Volunteer Coordinator
