June Gardening Tips

06/01/2005 - -Place any indoor plants outside in a shady location for increased growth. Watch their water needs as they will need more in outdoor conditions.

-Prune spring-flowering shrubs after blooming.

-Mow lawn regularly leave clippings on lawn unless excessive and make sure you are mowing at a proper height with a sharp blade. Mow high - at least 3" if bluegrass.

-Blanch (exclude light from tie leaves over developing heads) cauliflower when heads are 2 inches in diameter. Check variety, some newer varieties no longer require this.

-Remove flower shoots from spring bulbs then remove all leaves after they have yellowed and withered.

-Harvest garden items that are ready.

-Add mulch to all garden area.

-Adjust irrigation time clocks for June weather.

-Water according to need.

-Enjoy the green grass, the wonderful smells and beauty and the warmth of late spring. Take time away from all the work and relax in your yard/garden.

On this June day the buds in my garden are almost as enchanting as the open flowers. Things in bud bring, in the heat of a June noontide, the recollection of the loveliest days of the year - those days of May when all is suggested, nothing yet fulfilled. --Francis King
