Around Our Town...To Your Health

01/01/2005 - The holiday decorations are packed away, hopefully without any mishaps such as straining your back, falling off a ladder...the normal stuff that tops off another stressfilled holiday season. I hope the treadmill is getting a workout and that you can just imagine it saying, " Wow it's serious this time! I hope it will last." The New Year brings out the best intentions; we desire to take better care of bodies, physically, mentally, and spiritually. So we attempt to eat right, exercise regularly, avoid fighting with relatives, and go to church.

Two months later were back to old habits: ordering the super size value meals, the treadmill is a clothes hanger, you barred the relatives from your house, and a church representative is knocking on your door to see if you are taken with an illness. If you haven't noticed, there are some serious health issues going on, even with children, and you better listen up.

We have some pretty scary trends going on out there and the only person who can change that is you. Quit complaining about insurance companies, health care providers, and drug companies, etc. Most problems start and end with you. If you want to get healthy, you have to maintain a steady resolve -- get educated, understand, and follow through!

Start the year by developing the attitude that you need to set the example for those around you, especially your children. As a parent, you need to be the example, about getting healthy and staying healthy by exercising, stretching and, most of all, eating right. Get them to participate with you. Explain to them the importance of these concepts. Heck, drag the kids for a walk for 30 minutes whether the wind blows or not. Take them to the gym with you if they are old enough. Just get them away from the TV and video games. If they are kicking and screaming about it, just feel good about the aerobic activity they're getting. My kids grouse a lot but they go and we talk about school and what not. Plus, I think it embarrasses them if they can't keep up.

The message, folks, is for you to get healthy and include your family. Educate your kids so that they can stay healthy and enjoy life.
