Around our town...Get ready, set, shop!

12/01/2004 - 'Tis the season to be stressed out. As the holiday season arrives you already know what a toll it takes on your body both mentally and physically. We have to contend with our normal job demands as well as deal with the additional activities and distractions that accompany this time of year.

The body will utilize more nutrients and minerals and there will be more stresses on muscles and joints as you stand in long lines, carry packages and worry about what to buy for individuals...and that's just the fun part.

The real stress is dealing with the negative activities – frantically cleaning house for the relatives rolling into town, staying much too late at parties when you have to work the next day and, of course, the rude individuals who cut you off in the parking lot or block the aisles while you shop.

To deal with these issues I advise my patients to figure out their game plan. The primary idea is to get the body prepared. First of all, be sure to eat right and decrease your junk food intake. No matter how good all the holiday treats taste – cut down! If you're forced to stop for fast food, get a sandwich with a salad. Stay away from items your body doesn't need, such as fries and pop.

Next, supplement your nutrition with B-vitamins, vitamin C and minerals. Your body will utilize these to combat the effects of stress and exhaustion. If you're not presently taking supplements, contact your health care provider and they can advise you on how to safely add them to your diet.

Wear comfortable shoes with good support and cushion that will help when standing in long lines and walking back and forth through stores and parking lots in search of the "perfect gift". Also avoid carrying a heavy purse over your shoulder. This creates additional stress on your frame.

I hope your holiday season is an enjoyable and, above all, healthy one!
