Around Our Town...Ask the Decorator

12/01/2004 - If these walls could talk...Get Inspired

Start with what you have and love. You bought that pillow, throw, painting or area rug because you liked the color, pattern, shape or texture. That one piece can be your inspiration upon which you can build.

If you like the colors you can use that as your color palette. Don't be afraid of color, it holds the possibility of solving a multitude of design problems from bringing warmth to a boring, cold room or providing drama to a bland beige wall.

Color brings harmony, balance and style to a room. It brings out the beauty of wood grains, creates a mood and defines a space. Studies show white makes a room seem 3 to 6 inches larger. Are you willing to sacrifice all the great things color brings for 3 inches? A beautifully designed home also sells faster than a colorless box.

Fabric can be used to inject color into your home but it also brings so much more. Softness is the characteristic shared by most fabrics and you can use them to soften hard edges of an environment both physically and visually.

The choice of fabrics is staggering, both natural and synthetic. A decorator uses fabric as one of the first resources to improve any room. Fabric schemes with the right color, pattern and texture balance can bring drama, comfort and most of all warmth and visual rhythm to your surroundings.
