Around Our Town...Ask the Decorator

11/01/2004 - 1. I have just moved into a new home and really want to start decorating, but am not sure where to begin. Any ideas?

Decorating any room for many can be a very daunting prospect, but if done correctly can become an enjoyable project.

Many people begin decorating by painting the walls. They will pick a color or texture they like and then try to work from that color for the rest of the room. While this is not a bad way to begin, you may find that by creating a theme from a favorite picture, rug or pillow and working from these colors will give you a much more rewarding result.

A picture is usually one of the best selections to use because many times a framed print or photo is the focal point of the room. Selecting a picture is usually fairly easy as many of us already have one in mind and know which direction we want to take the room.

To insure you get the exact colors you want from the picture, take it to your local framer. By using a professional framer that is experienced in color selection and design, you can explain what you are trying to do. The end result will be a piece for your room that is not only spectacular in looks but preserved as well.

Once your piece is framed, ask the framer for color swatches of the matting that was used and take these to your local paint, flooring and furniture stores. By having these colors, you will be able to match tones that will help create the desired look you are seeking. Also be sure to ask any of the professionals you work with for their input. These people have a wealth of knowledge and experience that will help you to turn your home into the warm haven you have always wanted. GOOD LUCK!!

2. I have this large wall in my basement I am really tired of. What can I do to change it?

Large walls seem to always to be a problem when it comes to decorating. Many times a picture, mirror or some other type of fixture just doesn't seem to create the look you are seeking.

A mural may be the answer!! Unlike just paint on a wall, a mural can create a whole new aura. Murals create scenes that fit your personality and transfer a boring room into a relaxing getaway. Whether it's a babbling brook set at the base of a majestic mountain or a little villa in Italy, they give dimension and character to a once boring white wall and become great conversation pieces.

Many interior decorators know of someone who can paint murals, known as a muralist, as do many art galleries and museums. Simply look these places up in the phone book and soon you will be on your way to a beautiful scenic getaway right in your own home!
